File Formats for Streaming Video

Using video on the Web has always been about compromises. You inevitably have to trade off quality for performance or performance for clarity. The list goes on.

Of course, talking about video on the Web invariably leads to the Big Three: Quicktime, Real Player, and Windows Media. They're all vying for the biggest piece of the pie, and even as they roll out their latest offerings, it's still anyone's game.

Dealing with these Big Three players ultimately means putting the onus on your viewers. They are the ones who must download, install, and tweak various players to check out your videos. The typical download for one of these players is anywhere from 5 to 10 MB, which isn't a huge deal for dial-up modem or over-used network users (as long as they enjoy long coffee breaks), but it hardly seems worth it if all you want to show them is a short few minutes of video.

On the content side, creating Web-ready videos is no small matter. To do it right, you need industry-tested tools that can deliver batches of high quality streaming video for the Big Three streaming formats, as well as MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MP3. WMA has these tools.

And if you are using just one of the Big Three video formats you’ll be limiting and frustrating a large percentage of your audience.

Wouldn't it be great if there were an easy, painless way to put video on your web site so that any visitor could view it? Wouldn't it be even better if your visitors could view your creations without having to download a huge player that hoards all of their MIME types?

That is exactly what William Moffitt Associates does with the new FLV Flash Video encoding.  Since an estimated 98 percent of Web users already have the Flash plug-in installed on their computers, we think that video delivered in Flash is a great way to go.

But wait, isn't Flash about vectors and simple lines that maintain their sharpness no matter how infinitely large you scale them? Yes, that’s right, but William Moffitt Associates can now take any video and turn it into a Flash-compatible file to help our clients get their messages out to almost 100% of all web users ... clean, beautifully and hassle free.
